Thanks of course to the combined efforts of everyone involved, once again, nice job everyone!

I'll be posting a review for Werewolves on Wheels and Skinwalkers soon! I didnt have time to check them out, and had to post the article before I'd seen them, but they are getting their proper reviews this week so look out for that.Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-42311290682821842502010-11-06T11:14:20.261-07:002010-11-06T11:14:20.261-07:00For the most part, yes....

Great work here, many personal favorites as well. V, are half of those titles on DVD in R1? What amazes about that movie is the amount of monsters in it! In the end, its one big monster brawl!

Agree totally on Miike being one versatile director. THE GREAT YOKAI WAR is a childrens film, and its hard to grasp that he did a childrens film when we consider he is the guy behind films like ICHI THE KILLER, Q, and GOZU. Which by the way, to me, GOZU is by far his most messed up film.

I'll note those suggestions man!

There were movies I could have mentioned on this blog post that have werewolves in them, but arent necesarilly werewolf movies perse like: Fright Night 2 (1988) in which Jonathan Gries once again plays a werewolf, same as he did in Monster Squad. That was a nifty looking werewolf as well, I remember he would walk up walls to peep at naked girls, and I remember they attack him with flowers and he bursts on fire.Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-15881307203603429372010-11-01T14:14:10.724-07:002010-11-01T14:14:10.724-07:00Yeah I have GREAT YOKAI WAR. The older movies it's a "remake" of are much better, imo. Way better atmosphere as the CGI ruined the Miike one for me.

Miike has done lots of stuff. I was shocked to see an episode of ULTRAMAN MAXX he directed. Amazingly, he didn't have Ultraman raping any monsters, or excessive violence. He's very versatile, but his YOKAI WAR was kind of bland.

There's another seriously nutty Japanese movie called SWORD OF ALEXANDER from a couple years back. There's a werewolf-like monster in that, too. Check out the trailer, it's a crazy movie mixing sci fi/aliens/samurais/monsters all in a period setting.venoms5https://www.blogger.com/profile/13655919099947763891noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-33525520303731205772010-11-01T14:08:03.138-07:002010-11-01T14:08:03.138-07:00Hey Venom, I will be checking out those Kabikachi ...Hey Venom, I will be checking out those Kabikachi movies. They seem like fun. I watched one of those movies where they reunite a bunch of Yokai's called The Great Yokai War, it was directed by non other then Takashi Miike and had literally thousands of monsters on screen. Dont know if you've seen it, but its worth a watch for the diversity of monsters in it.Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-34602110670342610302010-10-30T15:21:58.767-07:002010-10-30T15:21:58.767-07:00@The Girl Who Loves Horror: If you havent seen In ...@The Girl Who Loves Horror: If you havent seen In the Company of Wolves, I recommend it, Shaun put it on his five choices. Its very surreal, fairy tale like, from the director of Interview with a VAmpire and The Crying Game. It was one of his first movies. Hammer films Curse of the Werewolf is also solid, very atmospheric, very old school, and the make up for the werewolf is freaking awesome! Plus, it benefits from having Oliver Reed in the starring role.

Oh and, damn, if you havent see Monster Squad, do yourself a favor and watch it on Halloween Night or something, its like The Goonies, but with monsters. Make up effects are solid!

@Venom5: I will be watching that remake soon as well, thanks for the heads up on that Venom.Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-60173444424172304742010-10-30T13:07:33.659-07:002010-10-30T13:07:33.659-07:00Yes, his films are a combo of the Universal and Ha...Yes, his films are a combo of the Universal and Hammer horror with a heavy dose of a Spanish touch and an occasionally heavier accent on the sex and violence. I reviewed a bunch of his movies, too. WEREWOLF SHADOW is pretty good. It's aka WEREWOLF VS. THE VAMPIRE WOMAN. Personally, I didn't care much for the movie itself, but it has an abundance of thick atmosphere. Naschy remade it in 1980 as NIGHT OF THE WEREWOLF under his direction.venoms5https://www.blogger.com/profile/13655919099947763891noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-73500688972483603662010-10-30T05:20:05.875-07:002010-10-30T05:20:05.875-07:00High five on Ginger Snaps! A friend recommended it, said it was one of his good ones. Let's see, I have no idea what to expect from Naschy, I havent even had a small taste of what his films are like. But what you said about atmosphere sounds enticing. I hear some of his films are like a Universal Movie, only bloodie and with more of an edge.Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-31593157241184116102010-10-29T21:00:46.042-07:002010-10-29T21:00:46.042-07:00You should tread carefully, Franco. Personally, I think the movies he directed are some of the best. EL CAMINANTE is his masterpiece in my opinion. It had an edge to it. I remember the opening sequence, with the sisters taking pictures of themselves as if they had commited suicide, with an opening sequence like that one, right from the get go you know the movie is edgy. Saw the second one, which kind of compared being a werewolf with being a drug addict. Never saw the others after that.

DOG SOLDIERS rocks, love the way the werewolves look on that one.

I wanted to talk about a couple of other movies too, like SKINWALKERS and WEREWOLF ON WHEELS, but I had a difficult time acquiring them. I'll reviewing them soon though. One of my faves in recent memory has been GINGER SNAPS (the first one, not the subsequent sequels), a low budget Canadian horror film with two girls trapped in suburbia while one of them begins to wolf out. This one features smart characters who are actually semi-aware of werewolf lore and the practical effects are pretty awesome considering the tiny budget they must've had to work with.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-75520887034635550772010-10-29T12:03:20.531-07:002010-10-29T12:03:20.531-07:00Hey Girlwholoveshorror: thats what these blog post...Hey Girlwholoveshorror: thats what these blog posts are for! Get up to date on films you haven't seen, hope you have fun watching some of these!

Venom5: Yeah, I saw an interview on the DVD (The WOLFMAN boxed set from Universal) where they explained they didnt want to go too scary with the make up, audiences back in the day werent used to such horrifying images. They had actually designed one that was closer to Lon Chaney Jr's make up in The Wolfman (1941) but decided to go with the more subtle one we see on the finished film.

Hey Venom, Im dying to get my hands on those Paul Naschy werewolf movies, I currently have one waiting for me at home, gonna be watching WEREWOLF BY NIGHT...tonite! Cant wait, it will be my first venture into Naschy's films, I hope he lives up to the hype! Nice selections from everybody ranging from high camp to high class and covering the gamut of the hairy howlers.

Regarding WEREWOLF OF LONDON, I recall reading in an old magazine or book that Hull didn't want to be covered in facial appliances so that the audience could still see that it was him playing the wolfman character.venoms5https://www.blogger.com/profile/13655919099947763891noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-87668592560621940602010-10-29T11:21:34.686-07:002010-10-29T11:21:34.686-07:00Okay, WOW... I noticed Neil Jordan has an affinity to fairy tales, he revisits this fairy tale like atmosphere in many of his films, like for example HIGH SPIRITS. It was that kind of a film were we go from a dream to a dream to a dream...almost like INCEPTION in that way. Loved it. I enjoyed the artistic direction and the use of miniatures in that one. Plus the werewolves ripping their human skin from their faces, those scens were awesome.

That scene you mentioned in SILVER BULLET was awesome, it is the highlight of the film and the werewolves on that scene look better then the actual werewolf thats doing the killing. The only thing with that movie is that I saw the "twist" from a mile away.

Recently had a chance to see WEREWOLF OF LONDON and enjoyed it, it has a really cool transformation sequence, for the time anyways. I noticed that the werewolf isnt as scary looking on that one, it felt like the filmmakers didnt want to be so scary with their images. Something they quickly rectified in THE WOLFMAN, were the werewolf was way scarier looking and the film was more atmospheric. Did you notice simlarities between that film and AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON? I did!Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-36415131821013108752010-10-29T10:07:47.528-07:002010-10-29T10:07:47.528-07:00A pleasure to take part as always Franco - this mi...A pleasure to take part as always Franco - this might just be the best one yet. Brian's contributions were fascinating, I havent seen any of those films and will endeavour to track them down. It was good to see one of my favourite Universal horrors 'Werewolf of London' get the attention it deserves from Johnny Thunder. What do you think of that scene in 'Silver Bullet' where the Werewolf/Priest stands at the pulpit and imagines his congregation as ravening werewolves, that for me is one of the greatest scenes in any Stephen King film...Gary Busey is great in it as well. Thanks again, it was good fun!Shaun Anderson [The Celluloid Highway]https://www.blogger.com/profile/18066744649878418309noreply@blogger.com
