Agree about the dream like atmosphere of Borman's Excalibur, it's one of the things I enjoy the most about it.

Yeah, Conan the Destroyer is a lot of cheese, but I love that about movies from the 80's, the silliness. Agree about the scores for these Conan films, both are awesome in my book. That decade was wonderful for us fantasy film lovers, and like you I love the practical effects used in all these movies.

"Excalibur" is also my favorite take on King Arthur. The way Borman films the whole thing is like a dream. It feels surreal and in the mist of legends the whole time. And yet that aspect makes it feel more powerful and mysterious. When I first saw the film as a kid, it scared the crap out of me, because it was like a filmed dream (with all that vivid red blood) was unfolding in front of me. I've seen some folks comment that the acting is a bit over the top, but I think it fits that dreamlike quality. Everything is bigger than life in this movie, the visuals, the acting, the score, everything. And Helen Mirren is one of the sexiest Morgana's I've ever seen.

But I've got to disagree with you on "Conan the Destroyer". I really didn't like the comic thief character, in fact all the humor really falls flat to me. Some elements are quite a bit closer to the original Howard stories, but the whole thing just feels too silly. But we get a second great score by Poledouris. The Conan scores are some of the best fantasy scores of the 1980s.Roman J. But the 80's were definetly his golden age, during those years studios gave him many millions to bring his stories to life.

Currently he is working on one called "Zero Theorem" the premise sounds promising! Looking forward to it. Good...Great list with so many of my faves on there. Good call on Gilliam. Man, he was on fire during the '80s, cranking out one classic after another. I totally agree with you about HIGHLANDER. I like to forget that the sequels were ever made. And with such a great premise it is dying for a reboot. Definitely!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-91482748045015402322013-05-01T05:14:20.542-07:002013-05-01T05:14:20.542-07:00Agree DrunkethWizerd, all those movies are special...Agree DrunkethWizerd, all those movies are special, I hold Legend in such high regard, it's still one of my favorite fantasy films ever. Willow too, just like you I watched it like crazy. The similarities with Star Wars never really bothered me.

Labyrinth I can sing along too...awesome soundtrack, I mean Bowie doing the music for your movie, how special is that?

@Jack Thursby: Time Bandits and Munchausen, so awesome. Munchausen is such an epic movie, such a spectacle and such a tragedy that it tanked. But hey, at least Gilliam got to make it, I'm glad that even though it was such a fiasco, we still got the movie to watch it.

Thanks for the link on the misguided promotions for KRULL, funny how sometimes Hollywood will say and do anything to get your butt on the theater seat!
Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-72602131600896144182013-05-01T02:18:41.972-07:002013-05-01T02:18:41.972-07:00Great list Franco. Reminds me I need to get around to watching Time Bandits and Baron Munchausen!

Read a really funny story about some very misguided promotions that they did for the movie Krull. I was born in 1980 and obviously had seen Star Wars while a child, but I had Willow on VHS and watched it like, everyday.
