It serves no purpose and he literally carried it on his back for absolutely no reason. This completely pointless artifact represents the lack of soul of the film. I think it gets a lot of heat simply because it is inevitably compared to Akira. I think the action sequences are astounding, great fun, with a great battle of philosophies to back the whole thing up.

Glad you are enjoying Japanese Themed Summer, the reviews and articles will continue for the rest of the summer, thats a promise! Kurosawa, Miike, Anime, Godzilla...J-Horror and much more. I loved that pic so much I simply had to use it as a banner, those aliens from planet X have such a retro look. Thanks for commenting!

J.D.: Its the kind of film that takes a while to take off, but when it does, you are in for a memorable ride! Agree, its not as awesome as AKIRA in my book either, but as you said, it has many interesting elements to keep us interested.

Thanks for commenting J.D.!Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-28681363307468952992011-06-24T07:13:41.125-07:002011-06-24T07:13:41.125-07:00Awesome review! Maybe not as much as AKIRA but there is a lot of interesting things going on in STEAMBOY. I haven't thought about this film in ages and it is definitely time to give this one another go.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-59568721925170019082011-06-24T06:27:21.859-07:002011-06-24T06:27:21.859-07:00Funny enough Francisco I actually enjoyed this pic...Funny enough Francisco I actually enjoyed this picture more than Akira. I was never a big fan of that one despite its impact anime as a legitimate medium.

This one really is a work of art and while it's not perfect I think it ages well. It's one of those films that is more impressive with the passage of time.

Anyway, a great review. I enjoy your look at Japanese animation and cinema. I also love your new banner with the fellow from Monster Zero. Keep up the great work!SFFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04256589316922398158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-45152916109824081122011-06-24T05:26:03.936-07:002011-06-24T05:26:03.936-07:00I guess some movies are just meant to be enjoyed b...I guess some movies are just meant to be enjoyed based on their level of destruction, you know what I mean? In this way the movie functions like a Godzilla movie, lots of destruction, plot is secondary, well, at least some Godzilla movies not all of them.

The way I saw it, even with all the action and destruction, to me Steamboy still had some meat and potatoes to it, they just give it to you earlier. Once the filmmakers get the motivations and personalities established, it's all action from there on in, which I had a blast with.

Thanks for commenting Univarn!Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-28686075897799451052011-06-24T04:33:16.318-07:002011-06-24T04:33:16.318-07:00Interesting review. I had two major problems with the movie 1) Couldn't stand the main character and 2) It was basically 'if Michael Bay did Anime' - not saying Michael Bay is bad, but way too much placed on action and little to no effort put on plot. Other than that, it was very exciting and intense with some quality moments that carry its run-time well.Univarnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01437654003558435749noreply@blogger.com
