The Gnome King is pretty scary, with all that fire and brimstone, Dorothy is about to get electro shock therapy, Queen Mombi is pretty scary looking and how's about her room full of detached heads...that are alive? I'd say that makes this version an extremely dark Oz film. It's a dark fantasy no doubt. But as you say, it has a lot of happy elements as well, when it comes to Dorothy and her friends, but I'm guessing the more creepy, scary elements scared a lot of moms and their kids away and thats probably why this one was a box office flop. A pity too, this movie is amazing, it's beautiful and incredibly underrated. The artistry involved on it is amazing even by todays standards. In fact, most of the eerie and nightmarish elements like the Nomes , Mombi or the deadly desert are more than balanced by the presence of Dorothy's adorable friends (I mean a sassy talking hen, TIK TOK and a toddler with a pumpkin head ! that's cuteness done RIGHT !).
So while it is different from the first movie's atmosphere, it actually is just as hopeful and uplifting .Saidi of the 90'shttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11627016774256959912noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-32937983364764530642014-04-17T03:37:01.581-07:002014-04-17T03:37:01.581-07:00Any chance you could tell me where you got a GOOD ...Any chance you could tell me where you got a GOOD copy of that image with Dorothy, holding the crown, standing beside the Scarecrow sitting on his throne?

And if it's somehow available for me to get myself?Samhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00397876293747859812noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-90622530621519643822011-11-21T06:00:33.638-08:002011-11-21T06:00:33.638-08:00@TheAnswer: Sorry I never replied, but better late...@TheAnswer: Sorry I never replied, but better late than never! You're one of mine, I love this one over the second one. It's superior in many ways. I would love to check out the other Oz books, I've only read the 'The Wizard of Oz'.

I read it a couple of months ago a tually and realized how much stuff was left out, and how much was added by the filmmakers. I was surprised to discover just how much was added for the film, and to my surprise a lot of the things I like about the 1939 film was added by the filmmakers.

I'm extremely curious to see Sam Raimi's take on the Oz universe, as you may already know, he is currently directing another Oz film which is supposed to be some sort of remake or re-imaging. Looking forward to seeing that one.

@Lisa: Wow! A cast member from Return to Oz! I'm honored to have one of Queen Mombi's heads replying on my blog! I'm sure working on such a big production must have been an awesome experience, and this truly was a unique film, it must be great to have been a part of it.

Thanks for commenting Lisa!Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-24871978272228769642011-11-19T12:42:04.852-08:002011-11-19T12:42:04.852-08:00I was in Return To Oz. Return to Oz supposedly stays true to the books, where the Wizard of Oz (compared to the book) was butchered up by the musical elements which made it overly cutesy. The Wizard of Oz is a rather dark series and Return to Oz does a good job reflecting that. In an era where everyone is doing a series of films based on classic children's books I'm really surprised The Wizard of Oz hasn't seen a similar treatment.Snipeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05084449549914572738noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8293273378239831747.post-69258860527009227842009-12-10T12:53:23.980-08:002009-12-10T12:53:23.980-08:00I love RETURN TO OZ for so many reasons.

Dont know why they decided to leave Toto behind, but it could be because directors hate working with animals, and children cause they tend to make things more difficult once filming starts.

As for the Scarecrow, I dont know, I kind of like the way he looked. I dig this movie alot, mostly for the dark tone it overtakes. The only two things that suked for me about this movie, is that when we finally see scarecrow at the end...he looks like shit!!! Honestly ive seen better masks in Wallmart than that one. The other thing that suked was the fact that they couldnt give Dorothy a better sidekick? I mean come on!! A chicken??!!Manuel Marrerohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05341967701127338133noreply@blogger.com
